Getting to & from Alleppey

Alleppey is accessible by air, rail, road and water.

By Air – Cochin International Airport, which is 78 kilometres (48 mi) to the north, is the closest airport. International tourists utilise this facility to reach Alleppey.

By Train – Alappuzha Railway Station is linked to cities like Trivandrum, Quilon (Kollam), Cochin, Coimbatore, Chennai, Bokaro and Mumbai. The railway station is about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) away from the center of the town. Since Alleppey is a prime destination, many trains from important cities like Bangalore, Mangalore, Kozhikode and Amritsar pass through this station.

By Bus – There are bus services operating from cities like Cochin, Munnar, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Chennai, Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore to Alappuzha.

By Water – The presence of a lot of backwaters and canals makes water transport a popular means of transport. National Waterway-3 passes through Alleppey. There is an SWTD boat jetty in the city that lies opposite to the KSRTC bus stand. It is served by regular boat services to major towns like Kottayam and Kollam besides to other small towns and jetties. Taking an SWTD boat is a cheaper alternative to houseboats for enjoying the scenic beauty of Alleppey.

 

Getting around Alleppey

There’s not much to see in Alleppey other than taking a houseboat along the waterways. The town is small enough that you can walk around easily. If necessary, you can hire an auto rickshaw to take you to the dock to board your houseboat.
