Literally meaning “The Land of Tamils” or “Tamil Country”, Tamil Nadu is the southernmost part of the Indian Peninsula. The cradle of ancient Dravidian culture, Tamil Nadu extends from the Coromandel Coast in the east to the forested Western Ghats in the west. At its head is the fertile Kaveri valley, a land of rice fields and spectacular temples.

The state is characterized by a history which dates back to over a thousand years and is home to a very rich culture. It is known as the “Temple State of India”, and across this magnificent state one will find a plethora of remarkable monuments and temples containing intricate carvings and majestic gateways. This is the site of ancient Cholamandalam, where the Chola kings built magnificent temples.

Tamil Nadu is the homeland of one of humanity’s living classical civilisations, a people whose culture has grown, but in many ways not fundamentally altered, since the Greeks sacrificed goats to Zeus.

Tamil Nadu is as dynamic as it is drenched in history. In Tamil Nadu’s famous temples, fire-worshipping devotees smear tikka on their brows before heading to IT offices to develop new software applications. Tamil Nadu has one foot in the 21st century and the other in the poetry of one of the oldest literary languages on Earth.
