Getting to & from Madurai

The main modes of transport to and from Madurai are by air, train and bus.

By Air – Madurai has an international and domestic airport with international flights to and from Colombo, Sri Lanka and Dubai. Domestic flights connect mainly to Chennai (Madras).

The airport is about 15 km from the City center off National Highway 47. It is best to hire a taxi from the airport from the counter in the arrival lounge or arrange for someone to meet you at the airport. For those who prefer to use public transport, you should take bus number 10A, which runs from the airport to the Periyar bus stand.

By Train – Trains are the best way to travel in and out of Madurai. The railway station is centrally located and is well connected to Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi.

By Bus – Madurai has several bus stands. Most inter-state and overnight buses terminate at Mattuthavani Bus stand. Private buses are found closer to the city center near Periyar bus stand.

 

Getting around Madurai

All the major Madurai tourist places are located centrally making it easy and quick to travel to these attractions by foot. If necessary, there are cycle rickshaws around the temple area that can take you to other parts of Madurai city.
