The climate in Madurai is hot and dry for most of the year. The best time to visit Madurai is from late October to early March.

The months of October and November have cool weather and are favourable for sightseeing and other tourist activities. Summers are best avoided as the weather is hot.

  • Winters (December to February) are pleasant with the temperature ranging between 18°C to 32°C. These months are favorable for sightseeing and temple visits.
  • Summers (March to June) are exceedingly hot with the temperature hovering between 26°C to 41°C. The climate is very hot especially during May and June.
  • Monsoons (July to August) has medium to heavy rainfall sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms.

Important festivals celebrated in Madurai with much enthusiasm, pomp and show are Pongal which is held during January, and Chithirai Festival which is held sometime between the months of April and May.
