Interesting Facts About Gallery of Modern Art Brisbane

  • The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Brisbane is the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in Australia
  • The gallery focuses on 20th– and 21st-century works from Australia, Asia and the Pacific
  • There are two galleries devoted to contemporary indigenous Australian art
  • The building itself is a piece of modern art – contrasting wood, concrete and brushed steel
  • The exhibitions showcase different media – paintings, sculpture and photography sit alongside video, installation and film
  • The Australian Cinémathèque, located at the GoMA, has two cinemas in which it presents retrospective and thematic film
  • On the second level is ‘The Leisure Class’, which includes multimedia displays depicting the contemporary packaging of leisure, consumption and lifestyle programs, as well as a gallery dedicated to screen-related exhibitions
  • One of the best views of the Brisbane river and city can be had from the River Lounge in GoMA
  • Free guided tours of GoMA are available at 11am, 1pm & 2pm Mon-Fri, 11am, 12:30pm & 2pm Sat & Sun
  • Admission is free to GoMA
  • The gallery is open Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm and weekends 9am to 5pm; it is closed Good Friday, December 25, and until noon on April 25 (Anzac Day)
