Interesting Facts About the Perth Mint Australia

  • Built in 1899, Perth Mint is Australia’s oldest working mint
  • It is also one of the oldest mints in the world still operating from its original premises
  • It was built to refine gold from Western Australia’s gold fields to make and distribute British sovereigns and half-sovereigns to the Britain’s colonies
  • It was owned by the British until as late as 1970
  • It now produces legal-tender precious metal bullion and commemorative coins for investors and collectors around the world, and bullion is still traded here

 

 

What You Will See at the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint has a fascinating exhibition which includes the world’s largest gold bars and largest gold nugget collection, historic coins, and displays on gold mining and refining. Eye the biggest coin ever made, weighing 1 ton, and see Australia’s best collection of natural gold nuggets, including the 369-ounce Golden Beauty, one of the largest natural nuggets in the world.

Visitors can have a hands-on experience at the Perth Mint – watch 200 ounces of molten gold being poured in time-honoured fashion to form a gold bar. The gold-pouring and minting operations takes place every hour in the Melting House that has been in operation for over a century. The molten-gold pouring demonstration takes place on the hour 10am to 5pm daily.

 

 

Free Guided Perth Mint Tours

The Perth Mint has hourly guided tours which take visitors to see Australia’s largest collection of nuggets, watch gold coins being minted, handle a 400-ounce gold bar, and engrave their own medallion. Tours start on the half-hour from 10:30am to 3:30pm with a guided talk, entrance in to the Perth Mint gold exhibition and gold pouring demonstration.

The shop at the Perth Mint sells gold coins and jewellery made from West Australian gold, diamonds, and pearls. The Perth Mint shop also conducts bullion trading from Monday to Friday 9am until 5pm.
