Summary
Getting to Kuranda is part of the fun. Some people drive up the winding 25km (16-mile) mountain road, but the most popular and scenic approaches are to chuff up the mountainside in a scenic train, the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Read this article to find out the reasons why you should take the Kuranda Scenic Railway.
5 Reasons to Take the Kuranda Scenic Railway
5 Reasons to Take the Kuranda Scenic Railway
- Popular journey – The most popular round-trip to Kuranda and back is one-way on the Skyrail (mornings are best for photography) and the other way on the train.
- Scenic views – The 34km (21-mile) Kuranda Scenic Railway is one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. The train snakes through the magnificent vistas of the Barron Gorge National Park, past gorges and waterfalls on the 90-minute trip from Cairns to Kuranda. It rises 328m (1,076 ft.) and goes through 15 tunnels before emerging at the pretty Kuranda station, which is smothered in ferns.
- In honour – Built by hand over 5 years in the late 1880s, the railway track is today a monument to the 1,500 men who toiled to link the two towns, and the ride on the steam train adds to the atmosphere.
- Luxury option – Opt for a simple Heritage Class seat or splurge on a Gold Class ticket with fine local food and wine, table service, swanky décor, and a souvenir pack.
- Package options – Several tour packages are available, from full-day rainforest safaris and visits to local Aboriginal centres and wildlife parks to simple round-trips combining rail and cable-car journeys. Choose one that caters to your particular needs.
