1. Domaine Chandon Yarra Valley
There is no better introduction to the delights of the Yarra Valley wine region than a stop at this Australian outpost of French champagne house Moet et Chandon. The spectacular cellar door and Greenpoint Brasserie provide panoramic views across a pastoral paradise of vines, meadows, hills and a lake. Naturally, the highest quality sparkling wine is the centre point here, but table wines are similarly outstanding. Take a tour to learn about sparkling wine production the Champagne way, stroll the beautiful gardens, breathe the atmosphere in. This is one of the Yarra’s priceless jewels.
2. Rochford Wines Yarra Valley
‘Rochford Wines’ property is one of the Yarra Valley’s true showplaces. Follow the curved driveway lined with trees and vines to a classy restaurant, cellar door among the barrels, cafe and a broad outdoor space for chilling among the beautiful Yarra hills. A sound shell in the grounds sometimes offers concerts to entertain and inspire. Wine quality is very good, and tastings are available of both Rochford’s Yarra Valley wines, and the products of their Macedon Ranges vineyards.
3. De Bortoli Yarra Valley
This winery-restaurant-cellar door complex in the picturesque northern part of the Yarra Valley should be a compulsory stop on any itinerary. It’s a welcoming, professional operation with excellent Italian-inspired cuisine, truly astounding wines, tasting room, cheese shop and maturation room. A perfect place to try a range of matured cheeses alongside a stunning selection of wines. The top-end wines here are among the very best in the valley, and the lower-priced examples show that you don’t have to pay a lot to get great wine.
4. Yering Station Yarra Valley
Yering Station is set on the site of the valley’s first vineyard, planted in 1838, and it is now one of the most impressive stops on any tour of the region. The winery/restaurant/wine bar must be seen to be believed – great views, delicious food and excellent service create quite a package. The wines are all good and the Yarrabank sparkling is one of the country’s finest.
5. Tarrawarra Yarra Valley
If you had to visit only one winery in the Yarra Valley, Tarrawarra would have to be at the top of your list. It’s an immaculately kept place on a hillside with superb views down the beautiful forested valley known as Long Gully. There’s a smart restaurant and cellar door perfectly placed to enjoy the wonderful ambience. Then there’s the other aspect of this incredibly impressive place, the TarraWarra Museum of Art, housing an outstanding collection of significant works by Australian artists. As if all that wasn’t enough, the estate’s wines are excellent, especially the super-complex Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Don’t miss any of it.
6. Coldstream Yarra Valley
The cellar door looks across the lovely pastoral landscape of the Yarra Valley towards the northern hills. It’s a comfortable place to taste the excellent Coldstream Hills range and chat with the knowledgeable staff about the wines. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the mainstays here, and the reserve Cabernet Sauvignon can be superb.
7. Sticks Yarra Valley
Sticks is named after founder Rob Dolan, an ex-Port Adelaide ruckman whose lean frame fit the tag perfectly. The Sticks wines have long offered great value, as well as high quality. Based on a mature vineyard on the sloped behind Yarra Glen township, Sticks winery has a new cellar door with a large outside deck that takes in one of the best views in the Yarra Valley. A great collection of wine books is worth a browse for the true buff, and local foods, especially cheeses, tempt the traveller.
8. Oakridge Yarra Valley
Oakridge was established over 30 years ago, and now it provides some of the best of all Yarra wines. Subtlety, complexity and refinement are hallmarks of the label, but great wine is only one of Oakridge’s attractions. The smart, contemporary restaurant serves seasonal produce with flair and imagination, while the soothing vistas of the lake, hills, valley and vineyard from here are food for the soul. A must-see and must-taste destination for all visitors to the Yarra Valley.
9. Mandala Yarra Valley
Lots of new vineyard plantings has taken place north of Yarra Glen in recent years and standards have varied, but some new establishments feel built to last from the start. Mandala is one of them. Cutting-edge architecture impresses from the highway and the stylish, quality feel of things is backed up by a professional, contemporary restaurant and cellar door. Lots of glass brings the manicured lawns and vineyards inside, and charming photos of country life add atmosphere. Mandala’s wines are already first class, especially the Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, both full of character.
10. Punt Road Yarra Valley
Punt Road’s name comes from Punt Road in the Melbourne suburb of South Yarra, the site of thriving vineyards 150 years ago. This beautiful tended modern vineyard is in prime Yarra Valley heartland, sharing its location with an apple orchard and a smart, comfortable cellar door. Punt Road wines are very good and well priced for their quality.
