Summary

Located about 2 kms from the centre of town, Royal Retreat Munnar is one of the best restaurants in Munnar. This hotel-based restaurant is more upmarket and targets well heeled travellers. Within their multi-cuisine menu, the Keralan dishes are the pick of the bunch. If you like strong flavours and rich sauces, Royal Retreat Munnar is well worth a visit.

Royal Retreat Munnar

Located about 2 kms out of town in the Kannan Devan Hills area, Royal Retreat Munnar is an upmarket restaurant that targets Western tourists and well-heeled travellers. Located in the hotel of the same name, this well presented restaurant, with its soft chairs and light music, appears at odds with many other restaurants in Munnar, in a good way, that is.

Royal Retreat Munnar has everything going for it – good service, an interesting menu and a large selection of drinks. With its white linen table covers and checked curtains, the decor and atmosphere here is stylish and modern.

While the menu at Royal Retreat Munnar is multi-cuisine, we were interested in their Keralan specialties. For dinner, we tried the Malabar Chicken Curry and Kerala Syrian Beef Fry with Steamed Rice.

Malabar Chicken Curry is a traditional Kerala chicken curry cooked in spices and coconut milk. This dish was truly delicious and went really well with the rice. The chicken was beautifully cooked and was just starting to fall off the bone. The potatoes and tomatoes in this dish added another dimension to the curry. We enjoyed the flavours and the texture of the sauce; however we would have preferred more chicken in the dish. This dish is best eaten with rice or breads to help soak up the  delectable sauce.

Kerala Syrian Beef Fry are cubes of beef cooked and sauteed with onions, coconut pieces and hot spices. This was quite a spicy dish and the added texture of the coconut pieces made for an interesting texture and flavour combination. My only concern with the dish was that the beef was a bit dry, although it would be difficult to make a beef fry without drying out the beef. This dish is best eaten with bread rather than rice as it is quite a dry dish.

Overall, I enjoyed my meal and would be happy to dine here again. My only concern is the travel time to get here as the road outside was in very bad condition when we visited this restaurant, and it can be difficult to get here unless you have your own car. If you like strong flavours and rich sauces, Royal Retreat Munnar is well worth a visit.
