Summary

Great value Indian Food can be found at Surya Soma, one of the best Munnar restaurants we ate at. Enjoy western music, friendly staff while you tuck in to a great Chicken Roast or Fish Fry.

Munnar restaurants: Surya Soma Restaurant

Located on the main street in Munnar, Surya Soma is one of the Munnar restaurants that is popular with both locals and Indian tourists. The restaurant caters for a multi-cuisine menu including North Indian, South Indian and Chinese dishes. Located opposite the bus stand in town, it is good place to get something to eat while waiting for a bus or if you’re on a budget.

It is not unusual to have Western 80’s and 90’s style music playing during your meal and the atmosphere is welcoming. Although this restaurant is always teeming with people, the service here is friendly, efficient and prompt.

On our first visit here, we chose to have Chicken Roast and Fish Fry with steamed rice for dinner.

Chicken Roast is a dish we have had at many places in India and it is always slightly different. They all have lots of onions, tomatoes and a mix of local spices. Surya Soma’s version was one of the better ones we had in India, and we put this down to both the generous serving of chicken and the spice mix that was fragrant and tasty.

Fried Fish was up next which arrived from a window behind our table from a smiling cook who was cooking in an outdoor kitchen. The fish was still moist, not oily and had a lovely spicy coating. Best eaten hot, this fish didn’t last long but it was full of small bones. Some people eat these tiny bones, however I am not one of them. Was it worth eating this tasty fish with mouthfuls of tiny bones? Yes it was, and I would order it again.

Our dinner was excellent value, and the service came with a smile, except for the owner who was too busy talking on his mobile phone to acknowledge our payment. Overall, we loved the food we had here so we decided to return for lunch before we left Munnar.

On our second trip, we unfortunately chose the Biryani Rice & Fried Chicken as the menu was limited to the lunch time dishes.

The Biryani Rice was more like plain rice, served with some herbs and fried onions that were added to the cooked rice. This isn’t really a biryani….however, with the Chicken Fry it did taste quite good.

The Chicken Fry was really tasty. Served with some red onions and green chillies, the flavour was great on its own; it wasn’t as oily as KFC or other western fast foods either. There was a slight spice coating to the chicken which really made this dish stand out. The piece I had was still moist in the middle, which was a pleasant surprise.

Our lunch was not the best meal we had but we were hungry and the food came quickly. We would suggest sticking to the South Indian dishes and avoiding the biryani rice.

We will definetely be returning to this restaurant the next time we’re in Munnar. Apart from the delicious food, the prices here make Surya Soma one of the best value Munnar restaurants.
