Ramakrishna Math Chennai is a monastic organisation for men brought into existence by Ramakrisha (1836-1886), a 19th century saint of Bengal. Started in 1897 by Swami Ramakrishnananda, one of the direct disciples of Ramakrishna, Ramakrishna Math is the first branch of the Ramakrishna Order in South India. Over the years, it has operated at different addresses and under different names before moving to its current address at Ramakrishna Math Road in Mylapore.

The motto of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission is:

For one’s own salvation, and for the welfare of the world.

In 1917, the Old Temple was built to house the shrine; today, it is a hall for public meetings as well as the monks’ living quarters.

In 2000, the New Temple was built which currently houses the shrine of Ramakrishna. The temple itself is a beautiful shrine incorporating aspects of Hindu, Christian and Islamic styles. Given the different themes, the architecture is surprisingly coherent, much like the shrine at Belur Math in Kolkata. The temple is open to followers of any faith for meditation.

The Ramakrishna Math complex is filled with lush gardens and greenery everywhere which creates a relaxed and peaceful ambiance. A walk through the complex is a must to get a sense of the tranquility that emanates from this place.
