Land Based Fishing at Learmonth Jetty Exmouth
Exmouth is the capital of fishing, both boat and land based fishing, in Western Australia. Most people head to Exmouth for game fishing and there are numerous fishing charters that will take you out for the day or half a day.
We decide to spend our time doing land based fishing as fishing charters usually cost a few hundred dollars while land based fishing is free. If you seriously want to catch some big fish, definitely go on a fishing charter.
Learmonth Jetty is a popular spot for land based fishing located about 40kms from Exmouth. Lighthouse Bay, Exmouth’s marina walls and Bundegi Jetty are some of the other popular land based fishing spots in Exmouth.
We found Learmonth to be the best spot for us as there were so many fish in the water just a lure throw from the jetty. Anglers are spoilt for choice, with bream, mackerel, whiting, trevally and queenfish swimming within easy reach of rod and reel.

Around high tide, we spend a couple of hours a day fishing here. We use lures to catch plenty of golden trevally. The fish are plentiful and fight with each other to grab the lure. We are spoilt for fish and throw some back into the water that we consider small to the dismay of other anglers.
I will always remember the one that got away – roughly a 2 kilo coral perch that was too heavy for my line and fell back into the water as we frantically tried to pull it on to land. Lesson learnt – we need to have a net with us which will make it easier to bring those heavy catches on to land.
If you decide to go fishing at Learmonth Jetty, look for the coral perch at the top right side of the pier. It likes to hide among the pile ons so just drop your line down and hopefully you can catch it.
