We visited Hotel Triveni late in the day for lunch so we ordered the South Indian Vegetarian Thali which is ‘all-you-can-eat’.

The South Indian vegetarian thali comes with a big serving of steamed rice and nine small servings of dal, sambar, tamarind water, vegetable fry, vegetable curries, butter milk, dahi (yogurt) and rice pudding. This is a wholesome meal that has a lot of variety to keep you entertained. However, since it is prepared in big batches, the flavours are diluted and the taste is pretty average. The thali is great for filling up the belly and since we were catching the train in the evening, it was a perfect meal.

The vegetarian thali was served with a Pappadum which was the highlight of the meal. The crunchy texture of the pappadum goes really well with the rice, dal and curries and gives it an extra dimension. The pappadums were fresh and crunchy but also a tad oily.

Another accompaniment that was an excellent addition to the thali was a Mixed vegetable pickle. Full of flavour and spices, this pickle really got the taste buds going and added much needed flavour to the vegetarian thali.
Overall, Hotel Triveni Kanyakumari is a great little restaurant for its good value vegetarian dishes, especially their South Indian vegetarian thali. The service is efficient, the tables are clean and the food is filling and cheap. This is a great restaurant for the budget traveller.
