Summary

Located on East Car Street, Hotel Seaview Kanyakumari has an excellent restaurant that caters for the upmarket and well-heeled travaller. This smart, air-conditioned restaurant has a menu catering for both North and South Indian cuisines; however their specialisation lies in the fresh local seafood dishes that are packed with the South Indian flavours.

Located on East Car Street, Hotel Seaview Kanyakumari has an excellent restaurant that caters for the upmarket and well-heeled travaller. This smart, air-conditioned restaurant has a menu catering for both North and South Indian cuisines; however their specialisation, in my opinion, lies in the fresh local seafood dishes that are packed with the South Indian flavours.

As you walk in to this hotel, you can see a nicely set up dining area, and clean, friendly and well dressed waiting staff. You can smell fragrant curries being taken to tables and hear the chatter of happy diners. The decor is very modern and posh – from frilly curtains that adorn the windows to the fresh linen chair covers and table cloths. Everything here is aimed to please the high expectations of the diners.

We decided to order two mains – Chicken Chettinad and Prawn Malabar Curry – with Steamed Rice.

Chettinad cuisine comes from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu in South India. It is one of the spiciest and most aromatic cuisines in India. Chettinad cuisine is famous for its use of  a variety of spices in meat dishes particularly.

Chicken Chettinad is a popular variety of the Chettinad cuisine and is hot and pungent in flavour. However, at Hotel Seaview, although they did warn us about the spiciness of this dish, we found it to be rather mild in comparison. We did love the flavours in this dish which was full of onion, ginger, garlic and a variety of spices. The sauce was thick and went really well with the steamed rice. The chicken was cooked perfectly as the meat was soft and moist, and the flavours from the gravy had blended in with the meat really well.

Prawn Malabar Curry is a fragrant South Indian curry from the Malabar region of Kerala that is made with a creamy coconut sauce tinted with tumeric. This is a mild curry that is creamy, spicy and very aromatic.

Although not as good as the Chicken Chettinad, the Prawn Malabar Curry was quite delicious. The flavours were a bit mild for our liking, and we thought that the sauce could have been made thicker which would have given the dish more flavour. The prawns were a bit overcooked, however, they were still very tasty having absorbed the flavours from the coconut gravy.

Overall, we really liked the restaurant at Hotel Seaview Kanyakumari and would rate it as one of the best restaurants in town. Apart from the extensive menu and delicious food, the decor and ambiance is very sophisticated (for Indian standards), and the waiting staff are friendly and professional. Although a tad expensive, this is a great restaurant that should not be missed. We will definitely be returning if we visit Kanyakumari again.
