Summary

Located on Temple Road in the hotel of the same name, Eastend Munnar is an upmarket restaurant with a multi-cuisine menu of both Indian (North and South Indian) as well as Chinese dishes. This smart restaurant has a nice decor and atmosphere to match their food. While they have an ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet, we were more interested in their Keralan fish specialties.

Eastend Munnar

Located on Temple Road, Eastend Munnar is an upmarket restaurant belonging to the hotel of the same name. It is one of the best restaurants in Munnar for a multi-cuisine menu including non-vegetarian Indian dishes – North and South Indian including some Keralan specialties – and Chinese food. They also provide an ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet for Rs 300 which includes vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes predominantly from the North Indian cuisine. The buffet seemed to be quite a hit with the Indian tourists who were staying at the hotel.

This is a smart restaurant with frilly curtains, white linen tablecloths and comfortable chairs with cushion-lined backs. The restaurant is very spacious and the tables are spread apart giving people ample room to move around freely. The decor and atmosphere in this restaurant was very pleasing and amiable.

Customer service was friendly and hospitable; our order was taken promptly and our food was brought out fairly quickly.

Although the buffet looked appetising, we love Keralan food so we were keen to try the Keralan dishes here. Our order consisted of Fish Molee & Kerala Fish Curry with Steamed Rice.

Fish Molee is a traditional Keralan dish and one of the most popular dishes cooked in a Kerala home. The word ‘molee’ literally means stew. Fish Molee is a preparation where fish is stewed in coconut milk and mild spices, so that the flavour of the fish dominates the flavour of the curry. The fish used for this curry can range from kingfish to pomfret to anything that is fleshy. It is a mild, delicate dish, usually served with appam, idiappam or rice. We thought this curry was a little weak and could have had a stronger coconut flavour or more spices.

Locally known as Meen Vevichathu, Kerala Fish Curry is another popular Keralan fish dish of the Kottayam style.  This dish is well known for being cooked in coconut oil giving it a totally different flavour to most curries. In addition to the coconut oil, this curry had strong flavours of spices, mustard seeds and curry leaves which overpowered the fish. However, the gravy was so delicious that it could have be eaten with rice on its own. This fish curry has a lot of gravy so it goes great with appam, idiappam or rice.

Overall, we thought that Eastend Munnar was overpriced for the quality of their food and lack of service. What we did like here was the lovely decor and nice ambiance – light background music, white linen table covers, and spacious, modern interiors. However, there are other restaurants in Munnar that have better quality food at a cheaper price.
