Hotel Thayif is a small eatery located next to the Government Museum on Pantheon Road in Egmore. This budget restaurant has an extensive menu of both veg and non-veg Indian curries. After visiting the museum, we stopped here for a quick lunch. From the extensive menu of Indian dishes, we chose Chicken Madras Curry with Porothas.

Chicken Madras is a highly fragrant curry that is unique to Chennai (Madras) and is famous around the world for its combination of tomato, onions, garlic and south indian spices. What better meal to choose when you are visiting Chennai and are eating where the locals eat. If you are yet to try a chicken Madras you can get a more mild and less flavoured version in most countries around the world. This curry is red in colour due to the extensive amount of chilli powder in this dish.

The chef at Hotel Thayif makes a great Madras curry. It is a more fragrant, stronger version than outside India, combined with beautifully cooked chicken and some bread, it makes a great meal. Perhaps the spices could be less, the parathas could have been slightly crisper but these are minor things. I guess the biggest issues with Hotel Thayif is the tables could be cleaner, the decor nicer and better service.

The Porothas were lovely – flaky, buttery and soft – and went really well with the curry.

Overall, Hotel Thayif is a great budget restaurant located very close to the Government Munseum in Egmore. This makes for a convenient place to have lunch after visiting the museum. Their Indian curries are delicious and very affordable.
