If you’re looking for some of the best restaurants in Alleppey, head to Thaff Restaurant Alleppey on YMCA Road. This restaurant is hugely popular with locals and tourists alike for their scrumptious Indian dishes as well as their Arabic inspired bites. Apart from their mouth-watering Keralan seafood specialties, they also serve succulent roast spit-chicken, shawarma and ice-cream shakes.

Thaff have two areas within their restaurant, a downstairs eating area and a more plush, air-con area upstairs. The menu is the same as well as the prices; it’s more comfortable upstairs with the air-con, and the décor and atmosphere is definitely nicer.

Customer service here is surprisingly pleasant, friendly and efficient. The waiting staff even insisted we sit upstairs as it was the better area of the restaurant. Even though the restaurant was busy, we were served promptly and our food arrived in a short span of time. Everything here is very professional and a high standard of service is the norm.

Our order consisted of a Sweet Lime Soda, Crab Roast, Meen Pollichathu with Porothas.

Sweet Lime Soda was cold, refreshing but not that strongly flavoured. It would be great downstairs but upstairs in the air-conditioning a stronger flavour would have been better.

Crab Roast is a traditional Keralan delicacy of crab, still in its shell, cooked in a roast style sauce. The sauce was thick and dry with a strong flavour from the spices mixed with tomato and onions which gave the dish a crunchy texture. There was a generous serving of crab in this dish which we loved. The crab was perfectly cooked and we enjoyed it so much, we quickly found ourselves searching the shells for all the crab we could find.

Meen Pollichathu (Fish wrapped in banana leaf) was nicely presented with decorations of edible salad on the plate. When we opened the banana leaf, the wonderfully aromatic smell that burst forth suggested that this was going to be a great night. The fish itself, which was well steamed in the banana leaf, had picked up the extra flavours from the spice mix that it was coated in. I enjoyed this dish so much that this would be my pick of the two dishes. However, the Crab Roast was outstanding as well.

The Porothas were a great accompaniment to the Crab Roast and Meen Pollichathu which were both dry dishes. The porothas were crispy on the outside yet still moist in the middle. They were so delicious they could have been eaten on their own.
