St Paul’s Cathedral Kolkata
Located a short distance from Victoria Memorial, St Paul’s Cathedral is the original metropolitan church of British India. An Anglican cathedral, it is one of the most important churches in Kolkata.
Initiated by Bishop Daniel Wilson in 1839, St Paul’s Cathedral was designed by military engineer, Major William Nairn Forbes in 1847. Its Gothic spire, modelled along the lines of the central tower of Britain’s Canterbury Cathedral, was added after the earlier steeples were destroyed in the 1934 earthquake.

The cathedral has a remarkably wide nave, a fine altar piece, three stained-glass windows in Gothic Revival style, two frescoes in Florentine Renaissance style and the great West window designed by pre-Raphaelite maestro Sir Edward Burne-Jones in memory of the viceroy, Lord Mayo. The original stained-glass East window, intended for St George’s Windsor, was destroyed by a cyclone in 1964 and was replaced by the present one four years later.
Surrounding the cathedral are beautiful grounds lined with trees. St. Paul’s Cathedral was consecrated in 1874. On its completion, St Paul’s replaced St. John’s Church, Kolkata as the cathedral. It is the seat of the Diocese of Kolkata, and the incumbent bishop is the Rt. Revd. Ashoke Biswas.
