Summary

Singhvi Haveli Jodhpur is a traditional family run guest house set in a heritage haveli in the old town of Jodhpur. The restaurant at this hotel serves excellent vegetarian meals at reasonable prices.

Singhvi Haveli Jodhpur

Singhvi Haveli Jodhpur Hotel is a red-sandstone, family-run, 500-year-old haveli – an understated gem. It’s in Navchokiya, one of the most atmospheric yet least touristy parts of the old city, that lies beneath the western end of Mehrangarh Fort. This is where we stayed while in Jodhpur as it is the pick of the bunch.

We decided to have our first dinner in Jodhpur at this hotel restaurant as we were tired, just having arrived from the train station. We had been rather lucky with good quality food at the last two hotels we had stayed at (Jaipur and Pushkar), so we were hoping to make it a hat trick.

The Singhvi Haveli Jodhpur restaurant specialises in North Indian vegetarian dishes. The hotel is run by a Jain family whose religion requires them to be very strict vegetarians. Although we are carnivores by nature, we were quickly getting accustomed to eating vegetarian meals in India. We had spent the last few days in Pushkar which is a strict vegetarian town. More importantly, it’s very easy to turn vegetarian in this country especially when the vegetarian cuisine is so varied and utterly delicious.

This relaxing and romantic restaurant has a very unique ambiance that is quite different to the other restaurants we had eaten at in India. It is colourfully decorated with sari curtains, rugs and floor cushions.

There are two dining options. The more prevalent option is to dine on the floor – by sitting on floor cushions and eating from a low set bench table. We did notice one small Western-style dining table in the corner, which is more suitable for older people who find it difficult to sit on the floor.

The setting is very rustic and in keeping with the Indian tradition of eating meals (in addition to doing several other activities) on the floor with the right hand rather than with cutlery. At first it felt a bit uncomfortable as we are not used to having meals while sitting on the floor. However, we needed to change our position after a while so as not to get cramps. Once we were relaxed and had our legs stretched out, it was quite nice having dinner while sitting on the floor.

Views from the rooftop above the restaurant are magnificent. We got to see the Mehrangarh Fort at a distance from the western side. There were many other blue-coloured buildings set in front of the Fort which enhanced the excellent view from the rooftop.

Unfortunately, we had to climb up several flights of stairs to get to the rooftop for the views. While we ate in the restaurant downstairs as it was late, it is possible to dine on the rooftop with the incredible views of the Fort as a backdrop to your dinner.

Customer service at this restaurant was good although we had to wait for some time for our order to be taken. Our dinner took a bit long to be served compared to other places but that was understandable as the food we had was freshly prepared. The waiting staff were friendly and spoke enough English to understand and communicate with us.

For dinner, we ordered two main dishes – Navratan Korma, and Chana Masala – with chapattis.

Navratan Korma is a Mughlai dish which gets its name (Navratan meaning “nine gems”) from the nine different vegetables, fruits and nut used in it. In true Mughlai cuisine fashion, cream (or cashew nut paste) is added to form the gravy.

This korma consisted of potatoes, cauliflower, paneer, banana, apple, cashew nuts and raisins in a lovely creamy gravy. This dish was sweet, spicy, and savoury all at the same time. Graham liked this dish with the contrasting textures and flavours. I found it a bit too savoury for my liking.

Chana Masala (also known as ‘chole masala’) is a popular Punjabi dish, where the main ingredient is chickpeas.  It is fairly dry and spicy with a sour citrus note.

This is one of the highlights of our stay in Singhvi Haveli Jodhpur. This dish was beautifully cooked with a tangy and spicy sauce. I can almost taste it again while writing about it.

The Chappatis were freshly cooked hence they were soft, moist and hot. The thin, flat bread went really well with the chana masala and the navratan korma. It was filling but not heavy which was a perfect accompaniment to the heavier dishes we ordered.

Overall, we really enjoyed dining at this unpretentious, sit-on-the-floor restaurant. The food was not only delicious but really good value given we paid a little over Rs 200. We really liked the ambiance here as it was so different to any other restaurant we visited in India. We were glad we stayed at Singhvi Haveli Jodhpur and dined at this restaurant. It can be hard to get a room at this hotel but it’s still worth it to come here for dinner alone.
