Located on East Raja Street, the Sculpture Museum Mahabailpuram contains more than 3,000 sculptures including interesting stonework of gods and goddesses. These are monolithic statues depicting the reign of the Gupta Empire, which are carved out from rocks. Buddhist sculptures are also present in this museum along with Hindu mythological sculptures. Some fine paintings are also on display and the front courtyard is littered with sculptures in stone, wood, metal and even cement.

Standalone pillar structures, wall paintings, Hindu gods and goddesses in various avatars and manifestations, miniature temples, sculptures of saints and priests are scattered across the Sculpture Museum. Most of the creations are result of years of creative zeal and hard work by the students of Mahabalipuram College of Sculpting.

 

Getting to & from the Sculpture Museum

The Sculpture Museum Mahabailpuram is located on East Raja Street, south of the Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram. There are several ways to get here but most people travel here on foot or bicycle.
