Located on Kayees Junction in Mattancherry, Rahmathulla Cafe is an institution for great biryani in Kerala. It is legendary among the locals for its chicken and mutton biryanis.

This is a ‘no-frills’ restaurant with bare bones tables, chairs and walls. People flock here for one reason – to dine on the delicious chicken and mutton biryanis. So, don’t expect any decor, decorations or ambiance, just good food. We did have to wait for service which was a bit of a disappointment.

It is widely believed that ‘Biryani’ was introduced into India by the Persians when they invaded India in the 16th century. Another school of thought believe the dish to be of South India origin. What is true is that South India has more varieties of biryani that any other part of the subcontinent. Given that we’re in South India let’s presume that the biryani originated here.

Biryani is a rice based dish that is made by steaming the rice and chicken or mutton for several hours. The meat is usually marinated in spices and yogurt and steamed inside the rice.

The best part about this dish was the amount of chicken which was plenty along with the rice. However, the dish was a bit dry – both the rice and the chicken. The biryani also lacked flavour and the rice wasn’t fluffy as it should be.

The biryani came with a side of accompaniments – red onions, plum sauce and pappadums. The accompaniments improved the flavours of the dish but it did change this dish from being a biryani to a totally different dish.

In our opinion, we thought that this restaurant in Kochi, Rahmathulla Cafe, was good value however the biryani wasn’t up to our standards.
