The restaurant is located in a vast open space with a high vaulted ceiling and fans overhead. Apart from a poster that covers the entire back wall, the decor is plain and simple. Red formica tables and chairs grace the floor of the restaurant.

While the service was friendly and hospitable, it was a bit on the slow side.

Tonight, we ordered Meen Pollichatu and Prawn Roast. This was accompanied by a Sweet Lime Soda and plain rice.

The Sweet lime soda was strongly flavoured and a bit sweet. It was still refreshing and was served with bottled water.

Meen Pollichathu (Fish wrapped in banana leaf) is a local Keralan fish speciality and Frys version was really tasty.  Here, the fish was served whole, covered with a spicy masala, wrapped in a banana leaf and shallow fried. Any fish can be used for this dish, however, the traditional fish used in Kerala is karimeen or pearl spot which was used in this instance as well.

The sauce was spicy, rich and particularly flavoursome. Some of the flavours we could taste were coconut oil, banana leaf, garlic, onions, spices and coconut milk which combined well together; however it was a bit too strong and overpowered the fish. The sauce was best had with the rice while it was better to eat the fish with a smaller amount of the sauce.

Another traditional Keralan dish, Prawn Roast is shrimps or prawns stir fried in a roasted spice and coconut mixture.

Apart from the dish being a bit oily, the prawns were beautifully cooked and the flavours from the roasted spices and coconut blended really well with the prawns.  This is a dry dish rather than being a curry which means it is best eaten with Indian breads like tandoori rotis or chappatis instead of rice. A side accompaniment of sliced red onions and lime would have made this dish more appealing.

Fry’s Village Restaurant is a decent Kochi restaurant situated in a convenient location in Ernakulum. While the food is delicious, there is room for improvement. The prices are affordable making the dishes here good value. Service needs to be improved especially when the restaurant isn’t busy. Decor is typical of an Indian budget restaurant so we can’t complain.
