Summary
Nirvana Restaurant Jodhpur is located 300 metres from the clock tower in Sardar Market. There are two restaurants here but our favourite is the first floor indoor restaurant with old wall paintings. The specialty of the restaurant is the Rajasthani special thali and after trying it out we would recommend it as a dish worth having at this restaurant.
Nirvana Restaurant Jodhpur
Nirvana Restaurant Jodhpur is located on the first floor of Nirvana Home Hotel in Tambaku Bazar, Jodhpur. It’s a little hard to find but look out for a Rama temple about 300 metres from the clock tower in Sardar Market. There are steps that lead up to the first floor where Nirvana Restaurant Jodhpur is located.
There are two restaurants here – a rooftop restaurant upstairs with panoramic views of the city, and an indoor restaurant on the first floor covered with 150-year old wall paintings of the Ramayana story. We visited both the restaurants to check out the decor and atmosphere, and decided to have dinner in the indoor restaurant on the first floor.

In our opinion, the indoor restaurant had more charm and character than the rooftop one. I particularly loved the wall paintings which really enhanced the atmosphere downstairs. There were detailed paintings of events from the Hindu religious epic, the Ramayana. They were old but really well maintained. The pot plants outside the restaurant also added character to the restaurant and gave it a garden setting from the outside. This complimented the interior of the restaurant really well.
Service was a bit slow here simply because the kitchen is located upstairs as well as the rooftop restaurant which was busy. However, the waiter was really friendly and answered all our questions with a smile. We felt sorry for him as he had to walk up and down the stairs several times with our tray of food and drinks.

I ordered a Chocolate milk shake to have before dinner. This drink was a disappointment as I could hardly taste the chocolate flavouring. It felt like I was drinking a glass of milk.

For dinner we ordered the specialty of the house – Rajasthani special thali. This is a very big thali and suitable for sharing between two people, so we decided to share a thali.
The thali was made up of six mini dishes including dessert – plain rice, Rajasthani special dal, dal fry, mixed vegetables, paneer masala, and rasgullas.

The Plain rice was quite simple with no jeera (cumin) or any flavourings added to it. We have gotten used to having jeera rice which adds so much flavour to the meal.
In addition to the rice, we would have liked some bread which would have gone really well with the dal and other curries. We had thalis in other Indian states which had a mix of rice and breads and we really enjoyed the variety.

The Rajasthani special dal was really delicious and one of my favourites. It had a thicker texture than normal and the lentils were more solid. I like my dal thick with a lot of flavour (garlic, onion, cinnamon, cumin) but not spicy and the Rajasthani special dal was exactly to my liking.

The Dal fry, in contrast, was a bit more liquid and similar to the dal we had in other regions of India. The taste was very different to the Rajasthani special dal. It had a strong flavour of garam masala which gave it a more spicy flavour.

The Mixed vegetables consisted of cauliflower, carrots, capsicums, and onions. The vegetables were well cooked and lightly spiced. It was nice but with most mixed vegetable curries it wasn’t really memorable.

The Paneer masala was a really well cooked dish. It had a lovely masala sauce that wasn’t too oily. I could taste the tomatoes, onions, garlic, and mixed spices which blended really well together. The paneer was lightly roasted (would have been better fried) and had a lovely texture. The light roast gave it more flavour and more texture. This was my favourite dish of the thali along with the Rajasthani special dal.

The Rasgullas were too sweet for my liking. It also had a strange texture; it was rubbery more than creamy and soft. Although some people like soft and chewy-style sweets, I found the rasgullas quite unappetising and didn’t finish them.
The Rajasthani special thali is a great meal to have at any Rajasthani restaurant as you can sample several dishes in one meal. Also, it comes in a sizeable portion and can be shared between two people. At around Rs 220, it makes it a really good value meal. We loved the Rajasthani thali and would recommend for everyone to try it while in Rajasthan.
