Summary

The Murchison River is the heart of Kalbarri and has carved its way through creating stunning landscape in its wake. Another way to view the River is to take a boat down the River and enjoy swimming, fishing, crabbing or just enjoying the beautiful scenery in front of you.

Murchison River Fishing in Kalbarri

The Murchison River in Kalbarri National Park is one of the best spots for fishing in Western Australia. Having had our fill of land based fishing, we go down to the beach and hire a boat for the day. Renting a boat means we can go swimming, fishing, crabbing and exploring the lovely Murchison River.

The power boats are only licensed for the river so you can go up to the sand spit of Chinaman’s beach but no further out to sea.

Head the boat straight out from the beach. Don’t cut the corner as its too shallow. Keep the line of crayboats moored to the right as you head up river. Once past the jetty keep to the right. Approx 5-10 minutes of motoring time look out for the markers (white bouys) and go down the middle of the bouys. After this you will see Castle Rock on your left. This a rocky outcrop which, with a 15min climb to the top, will give you a stunning view of Kalbarri. Also it’s a great fishing spot.

Beyond this you will see a low lying island with shrubs called Goat Island. Keep to the left hand side of this island whilst heading up river. The end of the island is the set limit for use of the boats in the river.

Graham captains the boat while I set up the rods and lures. I am thankful that the boat is covered above us so we get some shelter from the scorching sun.

We slowly make our way upstream, passing a few pelicans fishing and a couple of islands until we are in deeper waters.

The river is a great place to catch tailors and we try our hand at catching a few. Unfortunately, they are not biting today which might be due to the fact that they prefer bait instead of lures.

We give up fishing and anchor at a beautiful picnic spot along the river. A nice wooden table and bench under a tree allows us to enjoy our lunch along the river while we watch the pelicans fish instead.

On our way back to the mainland, we stop at Castle Rock and climb to the top of the hill. From the top, we get beautiful, sweeping views of the River and the land on either side.

It is midday and the sun is getting very hot. We are tempted to take a dip in the River but we give it a miss.

With our time up for the day, we head back to Kalbarri town having had a nice, relaxing day along the sleepy Murchison River.
