Of all the Albany restaurants, we decided to dine at Lavender Cottage in Albany, because we had read wonderful reviews about the restaurant, and we weren’t disappointed.

Situated in a delightful old renovated cottage, Lavender Cottage has great reviews for its French cuisine.  As we walked in, we were taken in with the decor. There are several small rooms that have a cozy charm about them. We were seated at a corner table which was rather romantic plus we had a decent view of the kitchen which we always enjoy as we can see the chef in action.

As we sat down, the owner who also attended to us for the evening asked us whether we had brought a bottle of wine with us. Apparently, Lavender Cottage is BYO so if you plan to dine here, bring your own alcohol. This makes perfect sense because Lavender Cottage specialises in mouthwatering, delicious French cooking so why would they waste their time serving alcohol.

Eileen and her husband, Joel Kuhl run this wonderful French establishment. While Eileen services the front end, Joel cooks up a French storm in the kitchen.

Eileen is a wonderful host, charming and friendly, and bantered with the locals at the other tables.

We always look around us to see if the guests at the restaurants are local or not. If the restaurant is filled with locals, then we know that the restaurant will be good. The tables around us are brimming with the locals.

Everything on the menu is fresh and produced locally. The menu is prix fixe for a 2-course or a 3-course meal and it is not cheap.

We decide to try out the 3-course selection. It is hard choosing from the splendid menu, so Graham and I decide to share our meals with each other so we can sample a bit of all the dishes.

For entrees, we try out the scallops. Our main meal is quail which is delicately cooked. We wrap up our dinner with a chocolate fondant that is paired with a creamy chocolate ice cream.

The restaurant is open for lunch Monday to Friday and dinner on Friday only. Dinner bookings need to be made weeks in advance as it’s open only on Friday.

If you’re searching for great Albany restaurants, Lavender Cottage should be on top of your list.
