Summary

Located on Bangalore-Nilgiri Road north of Mysore Palace, Hotel Pai Vista Mysore has two rather quaint restaurants – Gufha and Jungle. Gufha is themed to look like you are dining in a cave, while Jungle, as the name suggests, makes you think you are in a jungle. We opted to dine at Jungle and it was an interesting experience. The food was fantastic, the service was great and we had a wonderful experience dining here.

Being the animal lovers we are, we opted to dine at Jungle which was an interesting experience.

Designed to look like we were dining in an Amazonian jungle, the restaurant at Jungle was set under a canopy of entangled trees. Plastic animals, snakes and birds were perched precariously above us while the waiting staff were dressed to look like rangers. Even the chairs were upholstered with zebra stripes and leopard prints. To some it might look cheesy but I really enjoyed the vibe at this restaurant and the cool wooden curios around the restaurant floor.

Jungle is a multi-cuisine restaurant with a menu catering to Indian, Tandoor and Chinese dishes. While I’m sure the Tandoori and Chinese dishes are excellent, we decided to try out the Indian kitchen that night. We ordered a Malabar Fish Curry & Jungle ka Badshah (lamb marinated in yogurt and spices) with Basmati rice.

The customer service at this restaurant was above par; it was accommodating, friendly and attentive. They even made a dish for us that wasn’t on their menu simply because we suggested it.

The Malabar Fish Curry was cooked in coconut oil with mustard seeds and curry leaves. This is a typical Northern Kerala style fish curry that is popular in the state of Kerala in South India. The fish is marinated and lightly fried in coconut oil prior to simmering in a thick coconut milk and red chilli paste gravy along with onions, garlic and other spices.

The fish was beautiful cooked – tender and succulent – and we could taste the coconut oil it was cooked in. The rich, thick coconut sauce was not spicy but richly flavoured. We could taste the mustard seeds and garlic with a hint of red chilli. This dish was one of the best examples of Indian fish curry we had during our travels around India.

Jungle ka Badshah is a Punjabi style dish made with tender pieces of lamb from the shoulder marinated in thickened curd (yogurt), red chilli powder and spices. The lamb is then sauteed in a mixture of onions and tomatoes and cooked with herbs, and finally garnished with fried onions, tomatoes and ginger.

The lamb was tender and infused with the flavours from the spices in the marinade. The sauce was thick and creamy and had just the right amount of spices. The ginger and tomato garnish to this sauce made this dish quite different from other Punjabi style curries we have had before.

We were served a plate of complimentary digestives which included ajwain seeds coated in sugar and tamarind sweets which were so delicious that we filled our pockets with them.

Apart from the delicious food, what we really liked about Jungle restaurant at Hotel Pai Vista Mysore was the generous servings of curries and rice. The customer service was really refreshing and above the standards in Indian restaurants. I really liked the jungle decor, however, Graham thought it was a bit kitsch so the decor is quite subjective and some may like it while others may not.
