Golden Dragon Kolkata is one of the many Chinese restaurants located on the famed Park Street. This restaurant has been around for decades and has been run by a Chinese family for generations. Golden Dragon serves superb, no frills Chinese food at reasonable rates.

There are two dining areas – downstairs, and if that is full, head upstairs to a family area that is private and quiet.

The decor is in keeping with the Chinese theme – a reddish interior decorated with Asian decorative pieces. The dim lights aim to create a romantic ambiance, while the aquarium seems to provide a relaxed atmosphere.

The service is prompt and unobtrusive; in fact, we were served by the manager of the restaurant. Seating is cozy yet there’s enough room to have a private conversation.

Chilli Pork was a combination of sliced pork with fried onions, soy sauce and chilli. This dish did have a bit of heat to it but the chilli was more a flavour enhancer than a mouth destroyer. The pork was cooked in the dry bbq pork style with the light sauce bringing the elements together. This was a nice dish, nothing fancy, just a good combination of flavours.

Schezuan Chicken was served at Golden Dragon just like you get in the city of Schezuan, except it was served without bones. The chicken here was first fried and then the sauce was added at a later stage of cooking. This allowed the chicken to have a lovely fried flavour supplemented with a strongly flavoured sauce. This dish was actually more spicy than the Chilli Pork; the dish went well with the fried rice.

The Mixed Fried Rice had a lot of different flavours to it. The fried rice had chicken, pork, egg, peas, carrot, spring onions and shrimps; all of these ingredients had been lightly fried together to make a very traditional western style Chinese fried rice.

We enjoyed our meal and consider this restaurant to be good value, in addition to having good Chinese food.

Golden Dragon Kolkata is one of those eateries which, in my opinion, makes Kolkata the mecca of inexpensive good food of almost every variety conceivable.
