Coakers Walk Kodaikanal
Built by Lieutenant Coaker in 1872, Coakers Walk is a must for any tourist interested in a morning walk in Kodaikanal. The walk, winding around Mount Nebo, starts in front of the Van Allen hospital, running parallel to the Van Allen Hospital Road and joins the main road beside St Peter’s Church. It is a 1-kilometre (3,300 ft) paved pedestrian path running along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodaikanal.

The trail following the hillside provides a panoramic view of the hill station. Assuming it’s not cloaked in opaque mist, Coakers Walk provides picturesque views of the plains as well as scenic valleys. The stroll takes about five to ten minutes and the scenery is stunning. On a clear day one can view as far as Dolphin’s Nose in the south, the valley of the Pambar River in the southeast, Periyakulam town and even the city of Madurai.

A fascinating rare phenomenon called Brocken spectre can be witnessed, when a person can see his shadow on the clouds with a rainbow halo. This occurs when the sun is behind the viewer and clouds and mist are to the front.
There is an observatory with a telescope halfway along the walk. The Telescope House provides a panoramic view of the valley, plains and the nearby towns and should not be missed by the tourists visiting the place.
The ideal time to visit Coakers Walk is before 2:30 pm in the afternoon as mist starts to set in over the valley by late afternoon.

The nearby Church of St Peter built in 1884 and renamed to Church of South India (CSI) has fine stained glass windows which are stunning in the morning light.
