Albany Wind Farm

[singlepic id=3246 w=720 h=560 float=center]

As you approach Albany, you can see the wind turbines of the Albany Wind Farm in the distance. The road that takes you to the Wind Farm provides sweeping views of the ocean which is breathtakingly beautiful.

The Albany Wind Farm is one of the most spectacular and largest wind farms in Australia. The wind farm walk offers spectacular views of the 18 eco-friendly turbines along the Torndirrup peninsula. The turbines lower Western Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 77,000 tonnes per year.

There are 18 turbines in total which have the capacity to produce enough electricity to meet 80% of Albany’s electricity needs. The turbines were designed to withstand the strongest winds likely in Albany and have special lightning protection. It is a great wind farm site due to its proximity to the coastline and its near location to the main electricity transmission system.

The original turbines blades are made from fibreglass and kevlar, making them very flexible in order to withstand any conditions. These turbines are the largest that have been installed in the southern hemisphere. The turbines operate automatically, with the three blades adjusted to make best use of power output from any wind direction or strength. They have been designed to withstand the strongest winds likely in Albany and incorporate special lightning protection. The turbines were made in Germany.

The farm is owned by Verve Energy which also provides Albany with power from its power stations.

Albany wind farm is approximately 12km south-west of the city centre, along Frenchman Bay Road. Take Sand Patch road off of Princess Avenue, five kilometres outside Albany.

At the wind farm there is a large car-parking area, extensive network of boardwalks, artwork and information panels, plus a connection walk to the Bibbulmum track.
