Best Places to Find Varanasi Street Food

The street food in India is some of the best in the world and Varanasi street food is one of the best in India. The variety of options, the delicious tastes and textures and the cheap prices are all associated with Varanasi street food.

There are three areas where you can find the best street food in Varanasi – Assi Ghat, Dasaswamedh Ghat and Cantonment area. Depending on the time and the type of food you’re after, these are the two popular spots for some of the best street food in Varanasi. Below are some of the street food options available here.

Assi Ghat

My favourite and possibly a favourite of many others in India is the Aloo Tikki Chaat. This street food option originated in Delhi and has since become popular all over North India. While some of the best Aloo Tikki Chaats can be found in Old Delhi, Varanasi has the next best Aloo Tikki Chaats outside Delhi.

Aloo Tikki Chaat is made with crispy fried potato patties mixed with urad dal. These potato patties are broken up and mixed with a variety of sauces, yogurt, spices and coriander making it one of the best street food delicacies.

Another popular street food is Jhaal Muri which can also be found at Assi Ghat. Jhaal Muri is a preparation of puffed rice with slices of potatoes, tomatoes, onions, cucumber, spices and coriander mixed with a variety of sauces and oils.

A few other snack foods options that can be found at Assi Ghat include unshelled peanuts, papri chaat and roasted chick peas.

Head to Assi Ghat in the evening as the place comes alive with a variety of street food options.

Cantonment Area

The Cantonment Area is a great place to get street food at any time of the day. From sunrise to sunset, shops are always open and are busy selling all kinds of vegetarian snacks to locals and tourists alike.

A popular breakfast option is Aloo Kachori which is easily available in the states of North India. A Kachori is a round, flattened ball made of fine flour filled with a stuffing of baked yellow moong dal, gram flour and spices. In Varanasi it is usually accompanied with a spicy curry made of potatoes and chick peas.

A great snack found in the Cantonment area is Dahi Vada which is an Indian chaat, prepared by soaking vadas in thick dahi (yogurt). Made from fermented rice, a vada is a savoury fritter-type snack from South India. The combination is both delicious and filling and makes for a great refreshment for those hot afternoons.

This snack and other delicacies can be found in the small eateries that line the narrow lanes of Varanasi.

Head to Dasaswamedh Ghat Road in the morning for some delicious breakfast options. One of my favourites is the Dal puris with paneer and potato curry. Although dripping with oil, this dish is so flavoursome with small cubes of fried paneer and potatoes. Sit on the bench at the side of the road and dig into this tasty treat.

Dasaswamedh Ghat

If you in Dasaswamedh Ghat in the morning, perhaps returning from a dawn boat ride, look out for street food vendors with their tiny baskets of food. We found one vendor selling delicious plates of suji (Indian wheat similar to semolina) soaked in a coconut chutney. Simply delicious and healthy as well, this is a cheap eat that will fill your stomach and warm your soul.
