Located in Hospet, Udupi Shree Krishna Bhavan is a South Indian restaurant located next to the main Hospet bus stand. During the day it is a bustling place with locals filling up on the vegetarian thalis and South Indian meals that are on offer at this clean and well-kept establishment.

The main attraction of this South Indian restaurant is the quality and affordability of the meals; you don’t come here for the fine decor or customer service which is seriously lacking.

Graham started off with his favourite – a glass of Plain lassi. We’ve had numerous glasses of lassis all over India and most have been exceptionally good including this one. The lassi was thick and creamy with a lovely cardamon flavour. It was cold and really refreshing.

I decided to try a plate of Vadas with coconut chutney and sambar.

Vadas are a savoury fritter-type snack originating from South India. They are shaped in a doughnut or a disc and are between 5 and 8 cm across. They are made from dal, lentil, gram flour or potato. Vadas are preferably eaten freshly fried, while still hot and crunchy and is served with a variety of dips such as sambar and chutney.

It is hard to get vadas wrong and here was no exception. Freshly cooked, they were crunchy and tasted really delicious with plenty of curry leaves and fried onions to give it loads of flavour.

Graham had a Masala dosa another popular South Indian dish, similar to a fermented crepe or pancake made from rice batter and black lentils with a filling of spiced mashed potatoes.

It was really well cooked – crisp on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside. It had a generous amount of potato filling which had a wonderful spicy flavour to it.

Udupi Shree Krishna Bhavan is a wonderful place to get a good South Indian meal or simply a snack. Located conveniently near the Hospet bus station, it is a great place to have a meal while waiting for the next trip.
