One of the most popular pilgrimage centres in Varkala is Sivagiri Mutt, the Memorial dedicated to Shri Narayana Guru (1855-1928), Kerala’s most prominent guru. Built in 1904, Sivagiri Mutt is located 3 km (2 miles) from Varkala town at the top of the Sivagiri Hill.

Every day, countless devotees flock to the memorial of this great saint and social reformer who advocated “One Caste, One Religion, One God for Mankind”.

The Sivagiri Mutt is also the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham, an organization of his disciples and saints, established by the Guru to propagate his concept of ‘One Caste, One Religion, One God’.

The ashram celebrates Guru Deva Jayanti (in August) and the Guru Deva Samadhi (in September) every year. Colourful processions, debates and seminars, public meetings, cultural shows, community feasts, group wedding and rituals mark the celebrations at Sivagiri Mutt. Every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage (30 December to 1 January), thousands of devotees, donned in yellow attire from different parts of Kerala, throng this ashram.

Acts that one performs for one’s own sake, should also aim the good of others.

Getting to & from Sivagiri Mutt

Sivagiri Mutt is located 3 km from Varkala town at the top of Sivagiri Hill. The easiest and most convenient way to get there is to take an auto rickshaw. Buses from the main bus stand near the temple don’t go all the way to the top of Sivagiri Hill; expect to walk for about 1 km. Sivagiri Mutt is remotely located so it might be wise to keep your auto rickshaw waiting for a return journey. Alternatively, you can wave one down on the road outside.
