Located in a narrow laneway off Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, Parathe Wali Gali is well-known for its foodstall-lined laneway that churns out delectable stuffed parathas (traditional Indian fried flat breads) fresh off the tawa (hot plate). All the shops along this laneway make exactly the same stuffed parathas; some of the food stalls even have seating.

At the best of times, this laneway is always busy with diners especially during the hectic lunch rush. Pick one that looks clean, has decent seating and is busy making fresh parathas. Expect to be sharing a table with young locals who frequent this busy eatery.

Each shop has a board showing the long list of stuffings available – these include the traditional varieties of aloo (potato), mooli (white radish), matar (peas) and paneer (Indian cottage cheese) as well as some more gourmet stuffed varieties such as smashed pappadums, kishmish (sultanas), kaju (cashew) and crushed badam (almond).

When you order a plate of stuffed parathas, it usually comes with a few accompaniments in a thali making a full meal which can be had for breakfast, lunch or as a snack. These accompaniments are traditionally served with parathas for an Indian meal; they include a mint chutney, a savoury banana and sunflower tamarind stock and a selection of vegetable curries.

Aloo parathas are my favourite and we had these in a few places around India. So, instead we tried a couple of different traditional stuffed varieties  – Green peas and Paneer.

The paratha stuffed with green peas was really delicious; it was full of flavour from the slightly sweet peas that was nicely smashed which gave the paratha a really nice texture as well.

The paratha stuffed with paneer was a bit bland; the paneer on its own is a flavourless cottage cheese so it required extra spices and flavourings to be added which was missing.
