Karims Delhi
Located in Old Delhi down a lane across from the Jama Masjid south gate (No 1), this Delhi institution has been cooking up some of the best Mughlai dishes in town since 1913. Perhaps the most popular restaurant in Delhi for its great Mughlai dishes, Karims Delhi is always packed with both locals and tourists alike. The dishes are predominantly non-vegetarian which they serve out of big handis (steel pots) from their kitchen. Karims is so popular that they have multiple eating areas in different buildings located next to each other around a common compound where the kitchen is located. Even so, it’s hard to get a table sometimes; however, the wait is worth it just to eat some of the delicious Mughlai delicacies that they serve.
Some of the Mughali dishes on offer include Nargisi Kofta, Sheermal, Brain Curry, Shammi Kabab, Chicken Jahangiri, Mutton Korma, Mutton Barra and Chicken Curry.

We visited Karims Delhi for lunch one day on our visit to the city. We were shown into one of the eating areas at Karims and were given a table in one of the eating areas on the balcony. In a few minutes, we were joined by an American couple who were asked to share the table with us. Oh well, I guess it’s a very busy restaurant.
The decor is pretty simple with plain walls, rather low ceilings and simple formica tables and chairs.
Karims is littered with waiting staff who are constantly on the run taking orders and serving food to the busy tables. Given how busy the restaurant was, it was expected that service would be slow and we would have to wait for our order to be taken and meals to be delivered.
For lunch we ordered a plate of Chicken Biryani, Burrah and Tandoori rotis.

The Chicken biryani had a nice piece of chicken thigh and a boiled egg. The chicken meat was tender and had been well marinated giving the meat lots of flavour. The rice was fluffy and moist with a good mix of spices cooked in with it. It was one of the better biryanis we have had outside Hyderabad.

Burrah is a type of kebab made with marinated mutton. Burrah literally means “big” so this is a recipe for people who like big kebabs. Also known as tandoori lamb chops, Karims is famous for many of their lamb preparations and this is one of them. The kebabs are marinated overnight in a host of spices including garlic, cumin, nutmeg, and mace which gives the meat a warm and spicy flavor. The spices are balanced by the sharpness that comes from vinegar and lemon which are added to the marinade.
The burrah was beautifully spiced with lots of flavour; the meat was slightly dry but a dash of lime brought the meat to life and completed the dish.

The Tandoori roti on its own was soft, moist and tasted really good; however, as an accompaniment to the Burrah it didn’t do such as good job as it was a dry dish and didn’t really need any bread.
We loved Karims Delhi and wished we could try some of their other Mughlai dishes. The food here is divine even though we thought the prices were a bit on the expensive side. This restaurant comes highly recommended by us as the food is superb.
