Summary

The Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is dotted with numerous seafood restaurants. What attracts us to Kailis Fish Market Cafe is it’s relaxed atmosphere and no frills dining experience. Kailis Fish Market Cafe has won numerous awards for their fish and chips however we think they are a bit overrated in terms of the value of their seafood meals.

Kailis Fish Market Cafe is Fremantle’s award winning fish market restaurant with fresh seafood recipes, fish and chips located in Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour. Of all the Fremantle restaurants, it has been voted Western Australia’s best fish & chips on numerous occasions.

There are several Fremantle restaurants that specialise in seafood dotting the Fremantle Harbour, with Cicerello’s and Kailis being the best of them. We chose Kailis Fish Market Cafe over Cicerello’s Seafood Restaurant for a dinner venue as Kailis has a more laid back atmosphere. It also provides some of the freshest seafood available in a working fish market environment, creating one of the most unique and memorable seafood experiences.

What I like about Kailis is its second kitchen that cooks seafood BBQ. Having had a look at the fresh seafood in the showcase, we can’t go past the BBQ lobster. The menu also allows you to order a seafood basket, full of a variety of BBQ seafood, which I believe would be absolutely delicious.

While the lobster is sizzling on the BBQ, we head over to the main kitchen.

The menu is typical of a fish and chips shop. Since Kailis has won numerous awards for their fish and chips, we decide to try a plate of them along with a bowl of chilli mussels.

It is week night so there are quite a few empty tables. The atmosphere is similar to a cafe with simple wooden tables and chairs seated next to each other. The two counters for the kitchen take up the rest of the space.

Obviously you don’t come to Kailis for the decor or atmosphere; you come here for their delicious seafood.

Graham and I have slightly different opinions on the seafood we ate that night. While I really liked the fish and chips, chilli mussels and the BBQ lobster, Graham thought the food was a bit overrated.

My favourite on the night was the chilli mussels, and I scraped the bowl clean to ensure that I had every bit of that chilli garlic sauce.

While I thought that the seafood at Kailis was quite good on the night, having tried the seafood at other locations in Western Australia, I have had a slight change of heart. While Kailis has won several awards for their fish and chips, I have to agree with Graham that they are overrated, and the quality of their meals don’t justify the price.
