Summary
If you visit Coral Bay you must head down to the Main Coral Bay Beach around 3:30pm and feed the schools of norwest snapper that swim into shore at this time every day. Adults and kids are hand picked to feed the snapper to the squeals of delight from onlookers. We had a really great time and I’m sure you and your kids will too.
Coral Bay Beach: Snapper Feeding
One of the things to do in Coral Bay is to attend the snapper feeding session at the main Coral Bay beach.
The highlight of our trip to Coral Bay was the school of Norwest Snapper that we came across in knee deep water at the Coral Bay beach. It is a little intimidating at first when out of the blue we see a group of fish swimming towards us and then they seemed to follow us as we waded around. These are big fish too, measuring about 50 cm in length, so you can imagine the surprise when we see ten to fifteen of them swimming towards us.
Be warned however that these snappers are fed daily during the snapper feeding session at 3:30pm, so do not dangle your hands in the water. One little boy found out the hard way when he put his hand in the water and a snapper swam up and bit his finger.
If you’re looking for things to do in Coral Bay, head to the Main Coral Bay Beach at 3:30pm daily and be a part of the snapper feeding session. Numerous people including kids are randomly selected from the crowd to hand feed these hungry marine creatures. It can be a fun and exciting experience, especially for the young ones.
This sounds like a great place to take the kids. Is it dangerous to feed the snapper?
Hi Ash,
No it’s not as dangerous as people might think. The snapper are quite friendly and are only after food. They will peck at your fingers if your hands are in the water so you just need to be mindful of that.
