Summary

Sky Lounge is one of the best restaurants in Varkala for several reasons. Apart from the stupendous views from the outdoor dining area, the delicious seafood cooked for you, and served by attentive staff in a great open air cliff top restaurant, what else could you want? Candles, Music, Cleanliness? Yes, yes, yes – at Sky Lounge.

Best Restaurants in Varkala: Sky Lounge

Perched on the South Cliff of Varkala, Sky Lounge is perfectly situated for stunning views of the azure waters of the Arabian Sea and the golden sands of the beach below. Apart from the magnificent views, Sky Lounge cooks up a gastronomical storm in the kitchen and serves it with a smile in a chilled out atmosphere. Numerous tourists flock to this busy restaurant making it one of the best restaurants in Varkala.

A common sight as one walks along the cliffs are several seafood display cases set up in front of each restaurant. When we are choosing a restaurant for dinner, we ensure that the seafood displayed is fresh and there is good variety.

At Sky Lounge, the fish and other seafood variety looked fresh; there was plenty of ice to keep them cool during the hot Keralan evening. We liked the look of the seafood on display and selected a snapper and some calamari for our dinner.

Sky Lounge has two dining areas – an inside area under a canopy and the more popular outdoor area with sea views. We opted to dine outside and we picked a lovely table overlooking the beach.

The restaurant has great atmosphere and is nicely decorated with candle lit tables and light music. I really liked the minor decorations and touches that they had everywhere.

The waiting staff were professional, attentive and friendly here. We were quick to be served and we didn’t have to wait long for our meals.

As we waited for our dinner, we had a Banana Lassi which was cold, lightly coated with cinnamon  and full of bananas. This lassi was well flavoured but still had the bitterness of the yoghurt. It was one of the better lassis we had in India with lots of flavour and good quality dahi (yogurt).

The Fish Tandoori was the highlight of the evening and the best dish by far. It was well marinated and beautifully cooked. The fish was well cooked, still moist and the flesh peeled easily from the bones. We were surprised by the flavour of the fish as it was slightly smoked by the tandoor and the spicy tandoori paste made it awesome. This dish is served with your choice of rice or chips and salad; we chose the chips and salad which was fresh, crispy and went well with the fish.

Calamari Malabari was cooked in the traditional Keralan style with traditional Kerala spices, tomato, onions and coconut gravy. The calamari was succulent and combined with this Malabari sauce made for a fantastic meal. The serving was huge but you want to eat it all! This Keralan style curry is the meal you wish you could always have at home and Sky Lounge does this dish really well.

We loved our first visit to Sky Lounge so we decided to have our last meal here before we left. So we arrived here for lunch a few hours before our departure to the train station.

As we waited, we had a glass of Sweet Lime Soda which was thoroughly refreshing for the hot Varkala afternoon. The drink was strongly flavoured with lime and it had just the right amount of sugar to balance the acidity.

For lunch we ordered the Crab Roast with Steamed Rice.

Unfortunately, they took a while to cook our lunch so we had to pack it and eat it on the train. We were a bit disappointed however when we ate the crab it was fantastic.

The Crab Roast was the best crab I have ever eaten in India. It was perfectly cooked and the roasted gravy had so much flavour and depth. The crab itself was succulent, sweet and fresh. Combined with the spicy tomato sauce, the delicious crab made this dish excellent. We loved this dish so much we just wanted it to go on as the flavours were so good. Luckily, the serving size was very generous and we were spoilt eating it.

The next time we visit Sky Lounge, we are not exactly sure what we’ll order, perhaps it’ll be the same 3 dishes as we loved them all. Sky Lounge is clearly one of the best restaurants in Varkala. We loved it here – let’s hope you enjoy your meal here too!
