There is no place in India that does kulfi better than Mumbai. So we went in search for the best kulfi in Mumbai and found ourselves standing in front of the New Kulfi Centre near Chowpatty Beach.

For those of you who are wondering what kulfi is – it is the Indian version of ice cream. It’s a firm-textured dessert somewhere between an ice cream and an Indian sweet. It comes in a variety of flavours like pistachio, rose and saffron. It is a tasty treat which is also very refreshing for the hot and humid weather of India.

New Kulfi Centre has around 30 different varieties of kulfi. They range from the regular flavours like pistachio and rose to the more exotic flavours such as lichee and mewa chikki. Hygiene and cleanliness at this road side stand is impeccable with the staff wearing protective clothing – caps to cover their hair and gloves for serving. Each serve of kulfi is weighed at 100 grams; the kulfi is placed on a betel-nut leaf which is then weighed on a scale.

It’s hard to choose one flavour from the long list of mind boggling flavours at New Kulfi Centre. In the end, Graham decided to try Roasted Almond and I tried the Special Kesar Pista. Once the kulfi is weighed, another staff cuts up the round slice of kulfi  into squares before serving it on a plastic plate with a spoon. There is an area out the back which has a small section for seating.

Of the two kulfi flavours we ordered, the best one was the Roasted Almond. The flavour of the roasted almond was strong and wonderful and it blended really well with the creamy kulfi. In every bite, we were crunching on several pieces of roasted almond.

The kulfi had a very different texture to ice cream. It’s thicker, harder and richer than ice cream. It’s also sweeter and has more flavour than ice cream.

The Special Kesar Pista kulfi had a saffron and pistachio flavour. This flavour was milder than the roast almond flavour and didn’t work so well as a kulfi flavour.
